Post 5408 Jr. Vice and Auxiliary Member Award 2 Quilts of Valor to 2 Veterans in Canada

VFW Post 5408 Junior Vice Commander Eldrige Holloway and Post Auxiliary member John Finch presented  two Quilts of Valor at the 2017 Korean Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame.

One quilt went to Grandmaster Rudy Timmerman of the Canadian Army who served during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  The other quilt was awarded to Grandmaster Jimm McMurry who served in the US Army Special Forces during Vietnam. Welcome Home Gentlemen!

Desert Storm National War Memorial Fundraiser at VFW Post 5408

VFW Post 5408 has been chosen to host the First Fundraiser Event of the year for the New Desert Storm National War Memorial to be built on the Mall in Washington, D.C.

The fundraiser will be held in conjunction with our Labor Day Celebration Party at the post on Monday 4 September 2017 from 12 noon to 7 PM.

SPECIAL MENTION:  Our Department Commander for Georgia, Richard Attaway issued a challenge that if we raise $10,000 the state department would match that amount toward the memorial building fund.

VFW District #1 started us off with a generous $200 donation.

There will be a live band, food/$5 per plate and silent auction planned.  Come on out and make a donation; every little bit counts. Come out and join us for some good food, and great fun.

I’m asking ALL my Georgia local Desert Storm brothers and sisters in the Atlanta area to come out to join us and build this proud coalition again.                                       Donations from ALL are welcome!

All Post Members: An Observation from the SVC

There appears to be three distinct groups that comprise the membership of VFW Post 5408.

 The first group is mainly concerned with keeping the Post financially stable which involves raising funds by asking for donations, conducting raffles, provide gaming, hold community events and providing an open canteen. Bottom line, Post funding is the primary goal for these members.

 The second group is mainly concerned with assisting veterans and their families. The assistance is in the form of grants to needy veterans, assisting veterans with VA disability claims and providing other services that promote veterans and assist those alive and honor those that are deceased.   Bottom line, Post funding is important but not the primary goal for these members.

 The third group is mainly concerned with frequenting the Post during events or keeping a seat warm at the canteen. Bottom line, the primary goal for these members is self-indulgence which has its place in providing revenue for the Post.

 While all three groups’ make-up the Post membership, groups 1 and 2 provide a positive influence in sustaining the Post and its mission to assist veterans.

Menu:  Sliced sub sandwiches, Burgers, Hotdogs, potatoe salad, coleslaw and deserts. Cost:  $5 per plate

We will also have Karaoke and Open Mic for the brave and daring!
